How I Became An Able-Bodied Seaman? – Chapter 1

I am Thiwanka, a sailor who was born in a beautiful island located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka. The sea is a fascinating thing to explore. From my childhood, I preferred to visit the beaches and watch the picturesque view. I realized that I am passionate about exploring the world and there I finally decided to become a sailor. I did thorough research prior to starting my education to become a sailor.

There were many reasons to start a career as a sailor.

At present, all of us are a part of the globalized economy. In such a situation, possessing international exposure is pretty beneficial. A career as a sailor lets a person work with people from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, gaining valuable cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills.

For example, I started my career as a Deck Trainee and currently, I am an Able-bodied Seaman.

I Started My Life At Sea In 2015.

I joined the ship, Tabernacle Grace as a Deck Trainee in May 2015. At that time, I was young and kind of stressed as it was my very first time leaving my family for a longer period of time. I come from a close-knit family of four.

The Role I Played As A Deck Trainee At A Glance

As a Deck Trainee, I had to undergo thorough training to become an Ordinary Seaman. Working on a ship or vessel is a massive responsibility. 

Typically, the specific job roles and responsibilities of a Deck Trainee may vary depending on the type of vessel and the shipping company, 

Here, I would like to share in detail what I went through.

Possessing Navigation Skills Is A Must For a Deck Trainee.

I learned how to navigate a vessel safely throughout my contract period in including using navigational charts, instruments, and electronic navigation systems.

Assisting with Watchkeeping

I assisted senior deck officers with watchkeeping duties. Basically, watchkeeping involves monitoring the vessel’s position, maintaining a lookout for other vessels or hazards, and ensuring the vessel follows its intended course.

Routine Maintenance Is A Key Role That A Deck Trainee Should Play.

As a Deck Trainee, I participated in routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and painting the ship, as well as inspecting and maintaining deck equipment and machinery. Basically, routine maintenance is a must on a merchant ship. Even missing a single task may result in serious consequences, both in terms of safety and operational efficiency. 

Safety Procedures

I studied and assisted in implementing safety procedures and protocols, including conducting safety drills, maintaining safety equipment, and responding to emergencies.

Cargo Operations

I  assisted with cargo operations, including loading and unloading cargo, securing cargo properly, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Bridge Operations

I observed and assisted in bridge operations, including communicating with other vessels, monitoring weather conditions, and complying with international maritime regulations.

Team Collaboration

I closely worked with other deck officers, crew members, and sometimes with personnel from other departments to ensure the smooth operation of the vessel.

Now you see that learning and gaining practical experience in various aspects of deck operations and navigation is a must during a career as a Deck Trainee.

Conclusion 

It took me almost 6 years to become an Able-bodied seaman. That was a long period filled with many challenges and dedication.

Typically, Able-bodied seamen perform all operations connected with the launching of lifesaving equipment. An AB is expected to be able to operate deck machinery, such as the windlass or winches while mooring or unmooring, and to operate cargo gear.
